According to the Nielsen Company, a leading global information and media analyst, 17 percent of employee time spent online during August 2009 was devoted to social networking and blog sites, an increase of almost three times the time spent on such sites during August 2008.
Nielsen Vice President Jon Gibbs said the increase reflects “a wholesale change in the way the Internet is used” due to an increased desire of online consumers to “connect, communicate and share.” Marketing efforts by companies are reflecting this change, and the use of social media sites for advertising is literally exploding. Neilsen reports that online advertising dollars spent on social media and blogging sites increased by an estimated 119 percent over a year ago. The increases were even higher in certain sectors such as the entertainment and travel industries.
