Polycom, Inc., a leader in collaborative communications solutions, questioned more than 1,200 employees in the UK during its 2007 “Congested Lives” survey. The study concluded that British firms waste more than 17 million Pounds each year on unnecessary face-to-face meetings. Other results indicated that employees waste an average of 23 days each year traveling to and from appointments.
An overwhelming majority (82%) of the surveyed workers believed many of the face-to-face meetings they attended were not needed and could have been accomplished over the phone. More than one half stated they are less productive in their jobs as a result of being required to attend these unnecessary meetings. "By relying on physical face to face meetings ... a large proportion of the UK's office-based employees are wasting valuable time," said Steve Leyland, Managing Director for EMEA, Polycom.
